Discovering Southwell with Albus

Walking the landscape to map the places that make Southwell special to the people who live there.

"For me, the love of Place comes with the detail; and in trying to understand the stories and histories that go to make a living landscape, comes too, a sense of belonging." Barbara Bender 2018

This blog is a diary of the walks through the landscape of Southwell, Nottinghamshire to be undertaken by Albus the scruffy pup and his human, Victoria (that's me) as we seek a deeper understanding and knowledge of the town and the surrounding area and the places and stories that make it so special to the people who live, work and visit it.  All thoughts, opinions and mistakes in this blog are mine alone, and not those of the Discovering Southwell Group.

The walks are being undertaken as part of a community consultation project for Discovering Southwell to create a digital map of the community's favorite places.

Discovering Southwell is a community initiative to celebrate the people, places, history, culture and nature of Southwell. Check out our website at

This work is also forming part of my Master's research thesis on community engagement in defining cultural landscapes for ecomusuems.

How the Walks Work:

People are invited to send me their own personal favourite places in the Southwell area, via email, twitter and facebook. These could range from a favourite tree, a site with special personal significance, a loved view, a place with a story, a site of a seasonal event, anywhere and anything that matters to the people who know and love Southwell. Albus and I are then going to walk the sites, photograph them and add these to a digital map that will be published online for everyone to share the places and stories that make Southwell distinctive and special.
